Field's Terms and Conditions
Version: 1.1 (12 JUNE 2026)
Driving instructor: Matthew Field ADI
These Terms and Conditions explain how lessons with Field’s – Automatic Driving School are booked, paid for and delivered. Please read them carefully before starting lessons. By booking or attending a lesson, you agree to these terms.
Field’s – Automatic Driving School is operated by Matthew Field, a self-employed ADI-approved driving instructor trading as Field’s – Automatic Driving School. Your agreement for driving tuition is with the instructor personally.
Field’s provides automatic driving lessons only.
1. Eligibility to take lessons
Before taking lessons, you must:
1. hold a valid UK provisional driving licence, or another licence that legally allows you to learn to drive in Great Britain;
2. be legally entitled to drive the training vehicle;
3. meet the required eyesight standard for driving;
4. tell the instructor about any medical condition, medication, disability or other matter that may affect your ability to drive safely;
5. bring your photocard licence to your first lesson, and whenever reasonably requested.
You must tell the instructor immediately if your licence is revoked, suspended, expired, lost, or if your entitlement to drive changes for any reason.
The instructor may refuse to start or continue a lesson if they are not satisfied that you are legally entitled or medically fit to drive.
2. Lesson bookings
Lessons are arranged directly with the instructor. Lesson times, pick-up points and lesson lengths are subject to availability and must be agreed in advance.
The normal pick-up and drop-off location will be agreed with you. If you ask to start or finish somewhere different, this must be agreed before the lesson. The instructor may refuse a different location if it is impractical, unsafe, outside the normal working area, or would reduce the lesson time unfairly.
A lesson booking is not confirmed until the instructor has accepted it.
3. Lesson fees and payment
Current standard availability lesson prices are:
Single lesson rate: £40/1 hour
Double lesson rate: £80/2 hours
Block booking/package: £360/10 single lessons, £720/10 double lessons
Test: accompaniment, pre-test tuition and car use: £125
Motorway proficiency, 2 hour lesson: £120
Sunday and bank holiday lessons are normally excluded from standard availability. Where a Sunday or bank holiday lesson is agreed, it will be charged at the normal lesson rates plus a 50% surcharge.
Payment must be made no later than the start of the lesson, unless agreed otherwise.
Payment may be made by bank transfer/cash/card. If payment is not received when due, the instructor may refuse to provide the lesson and may treat the booking as a late cancellation.
Lesson prices may change from time to time. Where prices change, the instructor will give reasonable notice before the new rate applies.
4. Pre-paid lessons and block bookings
Pre-paid lessons and block bookings must be used within 6 months of purchase unless agreed otherwise.
Pre-paid credit is not transferable to another pupil without the instructor’s agreement.
If you stop lessons and have unused pre-paid credit, you may request a refund for the unused balance, subject to any properly chargeable missed lessons, late cancellations, test bookings or other amounts due under these terms.
Refunds will normally be made to the person who made the original payment and by the same payment method where possible.
5. Cancelling or rearranging lessons
You must give at least 48 hours’ notice if you need to cancel or rearrange a lesson.
If you give less than 48 hours’ notice, or if you are not available when the instructor arrives, you may be charged the full lesson fee.
The instructor may waive the cancellation charge at their discretion in exceptional circumstances, such as sudden illness, accident, bereavement or other serious events. Evidence may be requested where appropriate.
Repeated short-notice cancellations may result in future lessons being refused or only accepted with payment in advance.
6. Instructor cancellations and delays
The instructor will make reasonable efforts to arrive on time and provide the lesson as booked. However, lessons may occasionally need to be delayed, rearranged or cancelled because of traffic, weather, vehicle problems, illness, road closures, safety concerns or other circumstances outside the instructor’s control.
If the instructor cancels a lesson, you will not be charged for that lesson. If you have paid in advance, the payment will be carried forward or refunded.
If the instructor is delayed, the lost time will either be added to the end of the lesson where possible, added to a future lesson, or refunded/credited.
7. Operating hours and lesson availability
Field’s standard operating hours are Monday to Saturday, 8.00 am to 8.00 pm.
Lessons outside these standard hours are not normally offered, but may be available by prior arrangement.
Sunday and bank holiday lessons are normally excluded from standard availability. Where a Sunday or bank holiday lesson is agreed, it will be charged at the normal lesson rate plus a 50% surcharge.
Lesson availability may vary depending on the instructor’s diary, location, weather, road conditions, daylight, and the pupil’s level of experience.
During the darker months, usually from October to April, late afternoon and evening lessons for inexperienced learners will be considered on a case-by-case basis. This is because driving in darkness can place extra demands on new pupils, including reduced visibility, glare from headlights, increased difficulty judging speed and distance, and a higher overall workload.
The instructor may decide that late afternoon or evening lessons are not suitable for a particular pupil until they have reached an appropriate level of confidence and control. This decision will be made in the interests of safety and effective learning.
Where dark driving lessons are considered suitable, they may be introduced gradually as part of normal training so that pupils can gain experience of driving in darker conditions at the right stage of their development.
8. Fitness to drive
You must not attend a lesson while under the influence of alcohol, illegal drugs, or medication that may affect your driving.
You must also tell the instructor if you are unusually tired, unwell, distressed, injured, or otherwise not fit to drive safely.
The instructor may cancel or stop a lesson immediately if they believe you are not fit to drive. In those circumstances, you may still be charged for the lesson.
9. Safety and conduct during lessons
You must follow the instructor’s reasonable instructions at all times.
The instructor is responsible for the safety of the lesson and may take control of the vehicle, change the lesson plan, stop the vehicle, or end the lesson if necessary.
You must behave respectfully and must not act in a way that is abusive, threatening, discriminatory, dangerous or deliberately disruptive. The instructor may end the lesson immediately if your behaviour creates a safety risk or is unacceptable.
If a lesson is ended because of your conduct, you will still be charged for the full lesson.
10. Mobile phones, smoking and suitable clothing
Mobile phones must not be used while driving. Before the lesson starts, your phone should be switched off or set so that it cannot distract you.
Smoking and vaping are not permitted in the training vehicle.
You should wear suitable clothing and footwear for driving. Footwear should allow you to feel and operate the pedals safely. The instructor may refuse to continue a lesson if your footwear or clothing creates a safety issue.
11. Vehicle damage, fines and penalties
The instructor’s vehicle is insured for driving tuition.
You will not be charged for ordinary mistakes made while learning. However, you may be responsible for losses, damage, fines, penalties or insurance excesses where they arise from your deliberate act, recklessness, serious negligence, failure to follow instructions, or unlawful behaviour.
Examples may include ignoring a clear safety instruction, deliberately misusing the vehicle, using a mobile phone while driving, or committing an offence after being told not to proceed.
12. Progress, lesson planning and readiness for test
The instructor will give professional guidance on your progress and will advise when you appear ready for the practical driving test.
No instructor can guarantee that you will pass your test. Test results depend on your driving standard on the day and the decision of the DVSA examiner.
The instructor may advise you to delay or rearrange a test if, in their professional opinion, you are not yet driving safely or consistently enough.
13. Booking the practical driving test
You must discuss any proposed practical test date and time with the instructor before booking if you want to use the instructor’s car.
The instructor is not obliged to attend a test that was booked without prior agreement.
You are responsible for booking, changing or cancelling your own DVSA driving test. You are also responsible for complying with DVSA rules, deadlines and fees.
The student should be aware that the DVSA forbids the use of third-party test-booking agents, automated booking services or anyone offering to buy, sell, swap or transfer driving test appointments. If you use any third-party service, you do so at your own risk.
14. Use of the instructor’s car for the driving test
Use of the instructor’s car for a practical test is subject to prior agreement and availability.
The test-day fee is £[insert]. This includes [for example: one hour of practice before the test, use of the car during the test, and return from the test centre].
The instructor may refuse the use of the car for the test if:
1. they believe you are not ready to drive safely without assistance;
2. you have not taken sufficient recent lessons with the instructor;
3. you have ignored safety advice or failed to follow instructions;
4. the test was booked without agreement;
5. the vehicle is unavailable because of damage, breakdown, maintenance or circumstances outside the instructor’s control;
6. weather, road conditions or other safety issues make attending the test unsuitable.
If the DVSA cancels or rearranges your test, Field’s is not responsible for any DVSA fee, waiting time, travel cost or other loss. Any charge for the instructor’s time will depend on how much time has already been used or reserved.
15. Illness and infectious conditions
You must not attend a lesson if you are too unwell to drive safely or if attending would create an unreasonable health risk to the instructor or others.
If you become ill, you should contact the instructor as soon as possible. Short-notice cancellation charges may be waived at the instructor’s discretion where illness is genuine and unavoidable.
The instructor may also cancel or rearrange lessons where they are unwell or where health guidance makes it reasonable to do so.
16. Dashcams, in-car cameras and lesson recordings
The training vehicle is fitted with in-car camera equipment. This may include forward-facing and/or rear-facing cameras that record outside the vehicle, and an inward-facing camera that records inside the vehicle.
External recording is used for safety, road incident evidence, insurance purposes, instructor protection, and lesson review. It may also be used to help a pupil understand particular road situations, hazards, decisions, junctions, positioning, or other points arising during a lesson.
Internal recording is used for safety, training and review purposes. This may include reviewing observation checks, mirror use, steering, signalling, use of the vehicle controls, seating position, general driving habits, and other matters relevant to safe driving.
Where appropriate, recordings may be reviewed with the pupil during or after a lesson as part of normal tuition. A pupil may also ask to review relevant footage from their own lesson where this is reasonably practical.
Recordings are not used for public marketing, social media or promotional purposes unless the pupil has given separate permission.
Recordings may be retained where necessary for safety, training, complaint handling, insurance, legal, police or road incident purposes. Otherwise, footage will only be kept for as long as reasonably necessary and will be deleted in accordance with Field’s privacy policy.
Access to footage may be limited where it includes other people, other vehicles, private information, an insurance matter, a police matter, a legal claim, or anything else that Field’s is required to handle carefully under data protection law.
By taking lessons with Field’s – Automatic Driving School, you acknowledge that in-car recording equipment may be used during lessons and that relevant footage may be used for the safety, training and review purposes described above. If you do not want internal recordings to occur then you reserve the right to inform your instructor of your request and they will switch the internal video and audio recording off.
17. Photographs, reviews and marketing
After passing your test, the instructor may ask whether you are willing to have a photograph taken or provide a review.
This is optional. You can refuse without giving a reason.
Photographs, names, reviews or testimonials will only be used for marketing with your permission. You may withdraw that permission later by contacting the instructor.
18. Personal information and privacy
Field’s will collect and use personal information, in accordance with ICO regulations, needed to provide driving tuition, manage bookings, keep pupil progress records, communicate with you, handle payments, meet legal obligations, and deal with safety, insurance or complaint matters.
This may include your name, contact details, address, driving licence details, lesson records, payment records, test information, progress notes and relevant health or driving-related information that you choose or need to provide.
Field’s may process video and audio footage from in-car camera systems where this is necessary for road safety, tuition, incident review, insurance, legal protection, complaint handling or pupil learning. Further details are set out in Field’s privacy policy.
Your information will be kept securely and will not be sold. It will only be shared where necessary, for example with insurers, legal advisers, the police, DVSA, payment providers, or where required by law.
19. Complaints
If you are unhappy with any part of your tuition, please raise the issue with the instructor as soon as possible so that it can be discussed and, where appropriate, resolved.
Complaints should be made by phone, text or email using the contact details above.
Field’s will aim to deal with complaints fairly, promptly and professionally in accordance with the Approved driving instructor (ADI) code of practice, section 4 [link]
20. Changes to these terms
Field’s may update these Terms and Conditions from time to time, for example to reflect changes in prices, law, DVSA rules, insurance requirements, business processes or safety practice.
The latest version will apply to new bookings. Where a change materially affects existing bookings or pre-paid lessons, reasonable notice will be given.
21. Governing law
These Terms and Conditions are governed by the law of England and Wales.
